Visiting Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo for Fresh Sushi

Fatty tuna sushi sitting on a wooden counter. The fish is a deep pink color with a shimmer on top like oil. Beneath the fish is an oblong piece of rice.

I had a fitfull night of sleep last night. I was awake at 3am not able to get back to sleep. It was too early to get ready for the day and too late to get any kind of quality sleep. Eventually I got back to sleep and my alarm woke me much sooner then I would have liked. I accidentally turned it off instead of hitting the snooze and woke up groggy at 6am panicked because I was now already an hour behind schedule.

I quickly got ready and headed out for the subway. Thank goodness there weren't too many people on it, I don't think I could have handled getting pushed and shoved with so little sleep at that early hour.

I made it to the fish market and took a quick look around. Jordan would have been happy that he decided to skip this part of Tokyo. The smell of fish and the ocean was everywhere and people were scurrying around busy and hard at work. I see now why it's not truly a tourist destination - people are trying to make an honest living and tourists gum up the works.

There is one sushi place that is the must-go one. Given my illiteracy here in Japan I honestly did not hope to find it amongst the narrow and crowded alleys of the market. I just remembered what the guide books said - that it would be the place with the longest line an went on that. There was only one place that had people waiting and I figured my chances were good that it was the famous one. When I reached the head of the line after waiting an hour and a half I discovered sure enough that it was Sushi Dai.

They are known for serving sushi straight from the fish market next door. In theory your sushi could have been a happy little fish in the ocean only a few hours earlier.

The food was a dream. Each piece of fish melted in your mouth. Some were better then others and at the end of the 10 piece meal you could choose any sushi you wanted. I selected the fatty tuna which was my favorite. The bill of 3900¥ was worth every cent.
