Saying Farewell to Europe and the Conclusion of Eurotrip 2011

Three people standing in front of a fence that separates the sidewalk form a busy multi-lane street. A large white building is in the background. The building is decorated in a gothic style and looks almost like a castle with many Spanish flags hanging from it.

We are sitting in the airport now waiting for our flight. It feels like we have been away for years and at the same time like we never left. Maybe its because we spent so much time in the airports during our trip.

Yesterday we woke up late not leaving the hostel until noon. The boys went off to wander the streets of Madrid and see some of the few landmarks while I headed toward James's school to meet him for lunch.

We had delicious Doner Kebabs and he showed me his tiny school that he has been taking classes at then we sat on a bench for a few hours just talking ad relaxing. We always seem to pass our time together by doingnothing. I picked up a bunch of chocolate to bring back at the supermarket then headed to the hostel to rest and take more medicine to battle my terrible reaction to Madrid's pollen.

Joe and HT arrived a few minutes after me and said they had walked around then sat outside too. They had also gone to the market but bought box wine and sangria. We were able to create cups out of juice boxes and proceeded to play Kings until James arrived to go to dinner.

James and I headed to the local square and had delicious tapas. Croquettes, meatballs, empanadas, sirloin steak and potatoes with hot sauce, and bread. It was delicious. Afterwards we headed to get warm chocolate and churros. When we were done stuffing ourselves we said goodbye and parted ways.

I returned to the room to find HT and Joe playing cards with a fresh bottle of sangria. It turns our they bought two bottles but dropped one in the entrance to our hostel and had to mop it up. I was
surprised we were not kicked out since no food or drinks is allowed in the rooms.

The three of us headed out that night in search of Sanders, the promoter Joe had befriended the night before, and "chupitos gratis" or free shots. In Madrid all one has to do is simply pass a promoter uttering these words to receive free admission and free drinks. If you are like Joe and make friends with everyone then you can have free drinks all night. I stayed out with the boys for most of the time
until the pollen and sinus attack I had caused me to start losing my voice. I headed back about an hour early so I could shower and medicate in the hopes that I would not feel entirely crappy for our
flight home.

It is a bit surreal this trip. We spent a few moments talking about what we did and saw and it seemed like a dream the way we spoke of it.They say its not about the destination but the journey, in our case
it was both.
