How to Use Credit Cards for a Free Vacation

Travel wallet with different credit cards and currency

If you travel often enough chances are you’ve already found the airline, hotel, and car rental company that you prefer using. You’ve probably seen bonus point offers for credit cards from your preferred brands. They look awfully attractive, with bonuses that are sometimes so high that you can immediately offset the cost of your next trip. But how do you know you’ve picked the right one and aren’t just stuck with a bunch of points that you’ll never use?

Do your homework. Go directly to the rewards programs and look at what partners they transfer to and what the ratio is. Some do not to a 1-to-1 transfer and will penalize you when you transfer points to an airline or hotel.

Make a list of cooperative brands. Every hotel won’t transfer to every airline and vice versa. It’s important to figure out what hotel programs work well with what airline programs - especially since some will even offer additional points when transferring.

Spend like normal. It’s easy to feel anxious about hitting the threshold for getting your bonus points but if it’s higher than your normal spending you run the risk of getting into debt for the sake of a few extra dollars.

Play your cards right and you can easily stack rewards to get a dream vacation for next to nothing.
